2003 Plane Crash Report Result

Title: A CESSNA 172P, N65906, REGISTERED TO CENTRAL FLORIDA AIR MAINTENA

Report Date: 01/23

Plane Crash Problem: On January 18, 2003, about 1226 eastern standard time, a Cessna 172P, N65906, registered to Central Florida Air Maintenance, Inc., and operated by Comair Aviation Academy, Inc., as a 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight, crashed near Edgewater, Florida. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and a company flight plan was filed. The airplane was destroyed and the commercial-rated pilot and three passengers received fatal injuries. The flight originated from Sanford, Florida, the same day, about 1200. A witness in another airplane stated he observed N65906 in level flight, on a southerly or southeasterly heading, about 1,000 feet below him. He diverted his attention to other matters and about 15-20 seconds later, when he looked again to observe N65906, he saw the airplane in a near vertical dive. The airplane continued in the dive with the nose going to 100-110 degrees from the horizon. A piece, that appeared to be the size of a control surface to him, separated from the airplane and the airplane began to spin. The airplane then impacted the ground. Examination of the crash site indicated the airplane had impacted the ground in a near vertical descent and come to rest inverted. The outboard 5 feet of the left wing, which separated in a downward direction, and the separated outboard 2 feet of the right aileron were located about 300 feet to the east of the main wreckage. Pieces of the left and right fiberglass wing tips were located about 600 feet east of the main wreckage along with papers from inside the airplane. The investigation continues.
