Title: A CESSNA 414, N822DB, COLLIDED WITH RISING TERRAIN IN A HEAVILY W

Plane Crash Problem: On April 10, 2003 at about 1700 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 414, N822DB, collided with rising terrain in a heavily wooded area in Black Mountain 11.3 nautical miles west of the Cherokee County Airport in Ball Ground, Georgia. The airplane was registered to a private individual and operated by the Airline Transport Pilot, under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91, and visual flight rules. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the accident site and an IFR flight plan was filed but not activated. The pilot received fatal injuries and the airplane was destroyed by impact and subsequent post-crash fire. The flight originated in Rome, Georgia, at about 1440. The airplane was reported missing on April 11, 2003, and was located the following day.
Examination of the accident site found the airplane collided with trees and the ground, on a 090-degrees magnetic heading. The airplane rested on Bear Mountain at an elevation of 1850 feet mean sea level. The top of the mountain was 2,304 feet, and there was a 825-foot tall television tower in the airplane flight path.
Further examination of the accident site showed that both wing assemblies and the engines were separated from the fuselage. The airplane came to rest on a 244 degrees magnetic heading; the fuselage was also fire damaged. The airplane was recovered and moved to the Atlanta Air Recovery facility in Griffin, Georgia, for further examination.
