Title: 35-B33, N5FL, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING A GEAR UP LAND

Plane Crash Problem: On May 31, 2003, at 2000 Pacific daylight time, a Beech 35-B33, N5FL, sustained substantial damage during a gear up landing at Inyokern Airport (IYK), Inyokern, California. The pilot/owner was operating the airplane under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 91. The private pilot and three passengers, were not injured. The cross-country flight originated from Reno/Tahoe International Airport (RNO), Reno, Nevada, at 1800. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed.
Initially recorded as an incident, this was upgraded to an accident after examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector on June 12, 2003.
The pilot told the FAA inspector that the flight from Reno to Inyokern was a "little bumpy." He placed the landing gear in the down position at midfield; however, he landed gear up on runway 20. As the airplane slid down the runway, the airframe was structurally damaged. The pilot stated he thought the gear was down prior to landing. The gear handle was found in the up position.
