Title: GHT TIME, AN AIR TRACTOR AT-502B SINGLE-ENGINE AIRPLANE, N61353,

Report Date: 09/15

Plane Crash Problem: On September 12, 2003, approximately 0900 central daylight time, an Air Tractor AT-502B single-engine airplane, N61353, was destroyed when it impacted the terrain following a loss of control while maneuvering near Farwell, Texas. The commercial pilot, who was the sole occupant of the airplane, sustained fatal injuries. The airplane was registered to and operated by Tate Spraying Services, Inc., of Clovis, New Mexico. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a company flight plan was filed for the 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. The local flight departed Clovis Municipal Airport, Clovis, New Mexico, approximately 0845. According to the FAA inspector, who responded to the accident site, witnesses observed the airplane flying southbound and then pull-up into a nose high "almost vertical" attitude. The witnesses further stated the airplane banked to the right "and came straight back down." The airplane impacted the terrain in a nose low attitude, and came to rest upright in a field. The debris field measured approximately 30-40 feet in diameter, and the right main landing gear wheel assembly was not located. The closest weather reporting facility to the accident site was Clovis, New Mexico, located approximately 4 nautical miles from the accident site. At 0915, Clovis (CVM) was reporting clear skies, with the visibility at 10 statue miles, winds from 290 degrees at 6 knots, temperature 15 degrees Celsius, dew point 8 degrees Celsius, an the altimeter setting at 30.11 Hg. Based on a field elevation of 4,115 feet MSL, the NTSB Investigator- in-Charge calculated the density altitude at 4,907 feet.
