Airplane License

For anyone who wants an airplane license, there are a number of different options at her disposal. She will usually start with a student license, much like the learner's permit used while teaching students to drive a motor vehicle. In order to be eligible for a student license, the student must pass a medical inspection by a qualified doctor of aviation medicine and receive a medical certificate. Once she has passed, the aviation medical examiner will give her the student airplane license. A student airplane license lets the student fly under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor, and occasionally fly solo under specific, restricted conditions. Following the student airplane license, a student usually works toward the private airplane license, which allows a pilot the most freedom available to non-commercial pilots. If a student's goal is to become a commercial pilot, she will first get her private airplane license and accumulate flight experience over time. Regardless of the type of airplane license, a pilot will need a valid medical certificate and will have to renew her licenses every two years.

Fast Facts

  • Most pilots need between 60 and 70 hours of flight to complete their training for a private license
