Airport Noise Abatement

An airport noise abatement program is one in which remote noise monitoring terminals, or RMT, are placed at a point underneath the flight paths where aircraft arrive and depart the airport. A radar system known as Passur is used that downloads flight tracks into a sophisticated computer program. This program can give an analyst information such as the type of aircraft, its airspeed, the altitude that it was flying, whether it was an arriving flight, a departing flight, or a plane just flying over the area. The program has the ability to link this information together with the operations information for individual aircraft. It can even take an incident and link it to a noise complaint. All of the information gathered goes to a central processing unit, where it is expertly evaluated. The results are used to reduce the amount of noise that is produced by aircraft. Airport noise abatement has been very successful in reducing noise in those areas where it is in use, with the result of making the areas around airports a more pleasant place to live, work, and attend school.

  • Since the use of airport noise abatement is not a rule that must be followed, but a set of suggested guidelines, not all airports practice this program.
