Airport Screening

Airport screening is here to stay. Ever since 9/11/2001, airports around the world have tightened up their security in the hopes of keeping another terrorist attack from happening. Airport screening has relaxed a little since those early days, but not by much. Passengers start by removing their shoes and jackets, if they happen to be wearing one. Any loose change as well as a cell phone goes into a Ziploc bag, along with any handbags or briefcases. Laptop computers must be taken from their carrying bags. All of these items are placed into a large tray and slid down the moving ramp toward the x-ray machine. If you have a carry-on suitcase, it must also be x-rayed. No liquids over 3 ounces are allowed, and these small bottles are also placed in a Ziploc bag. Next comes the metal detector. Most people pass through here with no problem if they have removed belts, jewelry, and other accessories. Those with artificial limbs will set off the alarm, and will be taken to one side and patted down. This is all done very politely. Once you have passed through the metal detector, you may go and retrieve your items from the other end of the x-ray machine. Airport security may slow the start of your trip down, but is necessary to protect our world and the people in it.

Fast Facts

  • You may not take liquid refreshments through airport security. Check out the trash can at the x-ray machine, as it will be full of all sorts of beverages where people have had to throw them away before being allowed to pass through.
