FAA regulations for the governing of aircraft and flight in American airspace are set forth to protect pilots, passengers, and the general public. The Federal Aviation Administration, the FAA, oversees a wide variety of regulations that cover everything from airplane design to hot air ballooning. The rules are specifically created to protect the public and promote safe airline travel. Since September 11, 2001 a new set of regulations encourages protection of national security in the United States. The FAA regulations for airline safety number in the thousands when you consider each regulation and their corresponding sub-regulations and addendums. Some of the more interesting regulations are fairly well known by the general public. For example, Regulation Part 23 covers the air worthiness of a commercial airplane and is of extreme interest to passengers. This regulation includes-but is not limited to- how an airline seat is constructed and what fabrics are used, what fire prevention measures are available in the cabin of the plane, the number and location of escape hatches, and flight management procedures.
