Sport Plane License

A sport plane license is one of the most accessible types of certifications available for flight. Unlike the extensive flight experience and certification requirements for commercial licenses and professional licenses, a sport plane license simply requires that an applicant be 17 or older, have the ability to speak, read, and understand English, and log at least 20 hours of flight time. Aside from this, they only need to pass a written test and practical test, and have some sort of medical certificate to prove they are in good enough health to pilot a light sport aircraft. However, there are a number of restrictions for someone with a sport plane license. For one thing, they are restricted only to sport planes, as opposed to heavier aircraft. Also, they can only fly during the day, can only have one passenger, and cannot fly in airspace classes that require radio communication. Despite these restrictions, anyone interested in a casual flying hobby will probably be sufficiently satisfied with a sport plane license, and if not, the experience accumulated does count toward a higher certification.
