Air Carrier Ground Icing - Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS)
In the past 25 years there have been 35 air carrier accidents worldwide that have been attributed to inadequate ground deicing/anti-icing. The Aviation Safety Reporting System is a joint venture by NASA and the FAA to collect and analyze data to lessen the likelihood of aviation accidents.

Airplane Icing - National Center for Atmospheric Research
When ice builds up on an aircraft's wings, it increases drag, decreases lift, and can become a significant hazard. Icing has the potential to slow a plane in flight or even cause it to lose altitude. If ice forms on an aircraft on the ground, it can interfere with takeoff.
