Although it is an incredible nuisance, millions of pieces of luggage become lost airline baggage every year. On average, over 300,000 pieces of luggage are reported as being “mishandled” every month. The Department of Transportation keeps statistics on mishandling reports filed by passengers and posts the results by airline. While this data includes damaged, delayed and pilfered luggage in addition to lost airline baggage, it certainly provides proof that your situation is not all that uncommon. To recover damages for you lost baggage, you will have to fill out an initial report that the luggage is missing, and then a second more detailed report if the luggage is never found. The second form for lost airline baggage will include the estimated value of the lost luggage and the contents inside. While your losses could be in the multiple thousands of dollars, it is not uncommon for airlines to limit the amount of money they will reimburse.
