I am a new pilot and am not sure of all the laws that apply to me, especially those laws regarding licensing, insurance, and safety issues. Is there some way for me to get a brush up on basic aviation law?

Practical aviation law is something that affects everyone in the industry, including pilots, instructors, air traffic controllers, airport managers, investigators and mechanics. Because the industry is so wide and encompassing, sets of laws exist for a variety of situations that may arise. These laws also vary depending on your role. For example, laws relative to pilots are going to differ than those that pertain to mechanics and managers.
Violations of these laws may carry heavy penalties, including civil actions, license revocations, insurance disqualifications and, in extreme cases, even imprisonment, so it is definitely prudent for industry personnel to understand basic aviation laws and how they apply to them specifically. The best resource to begin with is the Federal Aviation Administration’s website which includes a section on regulations as well as licenses and certificates. Additionally, the website provides forms for registration, certification and even flight plans. There is also a section on policy and guidance which provides reports and manuals.
You can find a variety of books and other resources that provide information on practical aviation law in simple, easy-to-understand language. In addition to these resources, consult an attorney experienced in aviation law to make sure that you fully understand how aviation law applies to your specific situation.
