Have you ever been on a sightseeing tour? It is one of the most wonderful ways to experience a location. But they can be very dangerous, too. Any time people get on an aircraft, they are assuming a risk. Even though modern airplanes and helicopters abide by extremely high safety standards, you cannot be completely sure that a mishap will not occur. Federal Aviation Association (FAA) security regulations are constantly reviewing the dynamics of the industry to ensure that passenger safety is always the top priority.

The new FAA security regulations will include:

  • In the following 18 months, those helicopters that fly over water will be required to have floats that prevent the craft from sinking in case of an emergency landing.
  • Thousands of tour operators must now register with the FAA. They must now also adhere to much more stringent rules including float requirements as well as mind-altering drug and alcohol screening.
  • Those pilots wishing to provide tours for events now must have over five hundred hours of experience or a valid commercial pilot’s license.

These changes have been the result of a number of tragic aircraft accidents. On September 23, 2005, for example, three passengers were killed in a tour helicopter accident, due to a lack of safety floats. Two additional air tour accidents took place between 2004 and 2005 that left eight people dead. These rules are not as severe as the original 2003 FAA proposals, but they still seek to protect air tour passengers.

When a company, such as air tour guide, provides a service, it is expected to uphold very high standards when it comes to passengers and pilots. Many aircraft accidents are preventable, but simple negligence leads to fatalities. FAA security regulations can only do so much; the company is ultimately responsible for following rules. If you are involved in an accident because of someone else’s negligence, you should contact an experienced attorney to protect your rights and fight for the compensation you deserve.
