Two Die South of Atlanta in Small Plane Crash
Williamson, GA - Two people were killed today when their single-engine trainer aircraft small crashed in a Pike County field shortly after take-off.A cause of the crash just before noon near Peach State Field was not immediately known.
Pike County Fire Chief Tom Tyree said the 1940-model PT-26 Cornell was owned by the Commemorative Air Force and was carrying a pilot and a passenger.
According to its Web site, the Commemorative Air Force is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization whose goal is to preserve, in flying condition, a complete collection of combat aircraft that were flown by all military services of the United States in World War Two. The organization also provides museum buildings for permanent protection and display of the aircraft.
