There are several different aircraft licenses available to people wishing to become a pilot these days. The licenses available include a private pilot license, a commercial pilot license, and a helicopter license. All of these licenses can be obtained with the help of an aviation attorney after the completion of a required flight school course, a written test, a medical test, and the approval of the FAA.

Requirements for a License

The requirements for obtaining a license for aircraft piloting include the following:

  • The applicant must have completed flight training at a certified flight school
  • The applicant must have passed a medical exam where a physical was given, a blood test was taken, and an eye test was administered
  • The applicant must be at least 17 years old for a private license and 18 for a commercial license. If 18, must hold a private pilot license to apply for a commercial license.
  • The applicant must have a current FAA third-class medical certificate
  • The applicant must have logged at least 40 hours of flight
  • The applicant must have at least 20 hours of flight with an instructor
  • The applicant must have at least 10 hours of solo flight
  • The applicant must pass the FAA Private Pilot Airmen Knowledge written test
  • The applicant must pass a FAA Private Pilot flight exam

File an Application

Once all of the above has been completed the applicant must then file an application for their license (private, commercial, or helicopter) with the FAA. The application can be filled out on the FAA website, faxed to the FAA, or emailed to the FAA. The applicant should be as honest as possible on the application because the FAA will conduct a background check on the applicant to find out their criminal history. For instance, the FAA will look for prior felonies such as drug or DUI convictions. If the applicant has had any of these marks on his or her record, they should be disclosed on the medical history form.

Check Status

The status of a pilot’s license application can be checked via the FAA website. Just logon to their site, type in your application number or confirmation of receipt number and check the status.

Hiring a Lawyer

An aviation attorney should be hired or consulted by anyone filing an application for a pilot’s license with the FAA. The aviation attorney can help to fill out the forms properly, file them with the FAA, make sure all proper identification has been provided to the FAA and much more. The attorney will also be able to help the applicant appeal the decision made by the FAA if the application has been denied.
